Marketing in the News Blog Post: The Great Kit-Kat Heist
I found an article about a Formula 1 KitKat robbery that happened in Italy and learned how it was turned into an interactive marketing stunt. Hearing about hundreds of thousands of KitKats being stolen really caught my eye so I decided to find out more about this topic.
On march 26th 2026, a truck carrying around 410,000 KitKat bars were stolen. A group of men posing as Italian police officers stop the vehicle and car jacked it. The total amount being roughly 12 tons of chocolate. The limited edition run of KitKats were shipped out of a distribution hub near Turin in late evening.

Instead of releasing a huge corporate call for concern or demand for justification, Nestle decided to use the publication of the crime as a means of marketing, creating a way for people to find out if their KitKat bar was from the stolen shipment by looking up the numbers next to the bar code. If I had been on this marketing team I may have gone even further as to put some sort of prize into the game as well. If someone had a certain number, maybe it could be something in relation to the F1 movie, they would get a prize involving various things like a potential vacation to go watch an F1 race live with all expenses paid for.
This specific example of marketing is completely knew to me and extremely unique. Its a great example of turning something seemingly bad into an opportunity which was great thinking on Nestle's marketing department.
My biggest take away from this whole article, is what I mentioned above, always looking out for opportunities, even when you are in a tough spot, or having something undesired happen.
