Social Listening: Tesla

Over the years the company Tesla has found itself within the news for various ground breaking machinery, new tech, and a few other not so great circumstances. Recently on October 15th of 2026 Franz Von Holman, Tesla's chief design leader, along with Lars Moravy who is currently in charge of vehicle engineering showcased the newest concept for the Tesla Roadster.

Tesla's vision and goals: Incorporate solar into residential and commercial needs, store clean energy, and "Make badass, zero emission vehicles."

The second generation of the Tesla roadster was initially announced in November of 2017 with plans to build a "record shattering" electric grand touring car that would be the ideal and peak example of what an electric car could be. The original plan for the second generation Roadster included 620 miles of range with an expected 0-60 mph of 1.9 seconds all while still being a four seater car. On October 15th at the SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas the newest concept model for the Roadster was released. Upon first look, the whole body of the car had been redesigned.

Upon finishing unveiling the new model, Lars Moravy instructed the demonstration of its capabilities to start. To begin, Tesla revealed extremely advanced thrust and suction systems allowing the car to hang upside down, do flips, and have an impressive acceleration of 0 - 60 in just 0.59.

Within seconds of the show ending, the internet exploded, sparking many debates as to if the whole thing was even real, some assuming it was an artificially generated video. Once people realized this was the real the deal they went crazy with @mesoblow saying "Welcome to the future" another remark by @mannykhoshbin stating "Insane 😱😱👋".  People began making comparisons to the popular online game known as rocket league saying things such as "Rocket league is real" - @ Mathmartiin and by the photo sent by @yahairosilva of a screenshot from within the game.

Tesla has nearly 36.5 million followers across Instagram and X, typically posting a few times per month on Insta, and around 12 times a week on X. Their Instagram is used for highly curated showcases that show the best work among their products, which attributes to the small level of posting occurring on their social media page. Typically giving us scenic drives, car demos, and aesthetic photos of products. I believe this works perfectly in tandem with the way they go about posting on their X account, which is used for giving updates on corporate news, and software updates/features and production. Having a distinction between the two from a marketing point of view is great, it gives people two very different part of the company that should be, and thankfully are, separated.

Tesla has a great social media strategy and is very uncommon for most mega brands, yet manages to be very effective. They focus heavily on their social media, which organically spreads their brand across the world, along with community advocacy. Just like the event on the 15th this last October, videos spread like wild fire all over the internet, essentially marketing its self, rather than a paid ad that Tesla would spend money on. Another great component is the buyer made content, social media like You tube, TikTok, and other platforms are filled with videos created by people who purchased a Tesla and created a video about it. People often like to film themselves using the Autopilot, or reviewing the details of the car and its cool features. Videos such as Mark Rober's "Can You Fool a Self Driving Car?"
and many others create unsponsored advertising for Tesla.

Although Tesla has wonderful marketing, if I were to be in charge of their marketing, I would make make a few changes. A very crucial part of Tesla's image is Elon musk, he is essentially the face of the company meaning what he says and does is viewed as the direct view of  the organization its self. His reach across the media is seen by millions of people. This being said, I would encourage him to heavily stay out of politics, and associating himself with anyone on either side. While some people may demand that he joins a side to, "combat" the other I think overall more people will be dismayed by his actions if he does become apart of one party, (as we witnessed over the past few years). I would also recommend that he doubles his PR training as to not have any more "incidences" that could disrupt public opinions and views. One last action that Tesla takes, is the wonderful view of putting the customers before themselves, often giving people refunds, or special bonuses if things do not work as they should, creating a good word for their product.
